Identifying the
transmission
These gears can be changed out in 20-30
minutes with practice!, however, it is advised to
spend more time installing the first one to
familiarize yourself with the installation. Pay
close attention to the few but very important
details involved. You can then install gears for the
Race Tracks and remove them for normal operation.
The Bi-Product of Road Rage Gears is that they
will not effect gas mileage in town but will on the
highway. MPH reading will most often read in the
area of 10mph fast and Road Rage Gears does add a
touch of gear drive noise.
Website Photos are installation
references....Alternative Installations - Have a
Transmission Shop install the gears or recruit an
experienced transmission mechanic to install them.
First, Identify your transmission! These gears
only fit the 604 or 41TE. All overdrives with motor
facing front passenger and rear transmission cover
facing drivers side is a 604 overdrive. The photo
below will help you in identification.

Installation Procedure:
To Begin:
- Elevate Vehicle with
either Lift or Floor Jack (Make sure vehicle is
Secured!!)
- Remove front driver-side
wheel and plastic dust cover exposing
transmission gear cover.
- Oil will be lost - use
appropriate clean container to catch fluid and
be sure to leave selector in neutral.
- Remove Pan Bolts (Photo
#2)
-
- Factory uses silicone
instead of a gasket so a prying will be needed
to pry off pan. A regular screwdriver usually
does the trick. Try not to scar the Aluminum
Casing, however, if this happens, make sure
extra silicone is rubbed in to assure a good
seal.
- Some 604 units have nut
retainers. Use a screwdriver to bend back the
tabs and remove 2 bolts per gear if equipped and
remove the 1 1/4" nut and 1 1/2" bolt with half
inch drive impact wrench (Photo #3). Sometimes
these are difficult due to factory locktight
(Photo #4).
-
- Install Puller (Picture
#5) - use correct bolt to attach the two drilled
and tapped holes in the factory gears (DO NOT
impact these bolts in) - simply FINGER TIGHTEN
or damage to the bearing cage could result. Use
thread protector with puller and note there is a
select bearing spacer. Keep these spacers to
install back to same shafts. Both gears will
have one.
-
- Next item....Scrape off
all old Silicone. Use hand file or hand grinder
to remove 1/8" of material for large gear to
clear (Photo #6).
-
- Note....Large gear bearing
race will gladly fall out of place during
installation. Take note of how the bearing race
needs to fit the case. Notched area in case must
have notched area of bearing race (See green
arrows in Photo #6) line up in place. Clean area
and bearing race. Using Silicone in upper area,
glue bearing in place.
- While the bearing race is
drying, installation of the small gear can
begin.
- Explaining pre-loading of
the tapered bearing can be difficult but getting
this section of the installation right is more
important than anything else! Spending time the
first time and getting it right is a worthwhile
effort and knowing
how many shimsare needed will allow for much
faster times of installation in the future.
- The most fool-proof way to
correctly install the gear and get the correct
bearing preload (also the most time consuming)
is to install the bearing spacer and add 7 or 8
shims from the shim kit (locate them between the
gear and the bearing spacer). Install gear, bolt
and washer and impact them down. Then, check the
gear for free rotation (Photo #7). If it is
BOUND up, remove the gear and ADD 1 shim at a
time until free rotation is achieved. If the 7
or 8 shims you added ALLOWS free rotation,
REMOVE one shim at a time until it binds then
add one shim to get free rotation. Now you will
have the correct bearing preload.
-
- Throughout the small gear
setup, continue to make sure the bearing race
you siliconed in
stays in place as it could move out of place
during impacting.
- Add a drop or two of oil
on the gear bearings before you install them.
- Installation of the second
gear is the same.
- Due to gear and bearing
inconsistencies, the Factory uses a single
select bearing spacer. Often, no shims are
required at all but this is a CRUCIAL detail
that must be correct!
- Once both gears are
installed, recheck for free rotation. If nut
retainers were used and you decide to reinstall
them, lightly snug them up and re-bend the tabs
to secure them.
- Re-clean the pan to case
surface. Add a bead of silicone and install the
pan. Add washers to the bolts. Once all bolts
are in, tighten a couple down to the point where
you can still move the pan (this is a tight
clearance fit)! Move the pan from side to side
and up and down bumping the large gear. Use this
as a scale to create the clearance around the
gear (this pan is all we can produce at this
time but we will have other alternatives soon).
- Hold the pan in place and
tighten two bolts to keep it in place then
tighten the rest. Add plastic dust cover and
tire then add lost fluid (make sure you re-check
fluid). Installation complete!
- Note: These gears have a
touch of a whine and even more backlash whine!
- If the large gear is
touching the cover, loosen the bolts and try
tapping the cover in the needed direction to
correct it.
- When reinstalling the
original gears, be sure to keep track of the
shims that were needed on the race gears! Next
time installation should only take 20 to 30
minutes!
